The Holocene dynamics of Ryder Glacier and ice tongue in north Greenland

چکیده
Abstract. The northern sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet is considered to be particularly susceptible ice mass loss arising from increased glacier discharge in coming decades. However, past extent and dynamics outlet glaciers this region, hence their vulnerability climate change, are poorly documented. In summer 2019, Swedish icebreaker Oden entered previously unchartered waters Sherard Osborn Fjord, where Ryder Glacier drains approximately 2 % Greenland's sheet into Lincoln Sea. Here we reconstruct Holocene its tongue by combining radiocarbon dating with sedimentary facies analyses along a 45 km transect marine sediment cores collected between modern margin mouth fjord. results illustrate that retreated grounded position at fjord during Early (> 10.7±0.4 ka cal BP) receded more than 120 end Fjord Middle (6.3±0.3 BP), likely becoming completely land-based. A re-advance occurred Late Holocene, marine-based around 3.9±0.4 BP. An tongue, similar current was established (between 3.6±0.4 2.9±0.4 extended maximum historical near 0.9±0.3 Laminated, clast-poor sediments were deposited entire retreat regrowth phases, suggesting persistence an only collapsed when behind prominent topographic high landward narrows inland, constrained steep-sided cliffs, contains number bathymetric pinning points also shield grounding zone warm Atlantic waters, has shallowing inland sub-ice topography. 1 I ce mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet is a primary contributor to global sea level rise. The rate of ice loss has accelerated over the last couple of decades and Greenland currently contributes about 0.7-1.1 mm/yr to sea-level rise (260-380 Gt/ice per year; Enderlin et al. 2014; Shepherd et al. 2012). Predicting the potential rate and limits of future mass loss requires a clear understa...

Studies of biotic remains of polar ice caps have been limited to morphological identification of plant pollen and spores. By using sensitive molecular techniques, we now demonstrate a much greater range of detectable organisms; from 2000- and 4000-year-old ice-core samples, we obtained and characterized 120 clones that represent at least 57 distinct taxa and reveal a diversity of fungi, plants,...

Multiyear accumulation and temperature history near the North Greenland Ice Core Project site, north central Greenland
This paper presents a comparison of two independent methods of estimating subseasonal accumulation across the interior of Greenland. These methods, highresolution snow pit studies and atmospheric modeling, have differing spatial and temporal resolution, but both can estimate net accumulation for subseasonal and shorter periods. The snow pit approach is based on a documented relationship between...
